I worked on for years on a series about women in Greek mythology. One of the subjects I chose was Leucothia. I chose to do a small altarpiece. It was common for traveling priests to carry a small collapsible alter/altarpiece for itinerant religious services. Leucothia was the goddess of lost loved ones who were lost at sea. I portrayed the story of Leucothia using representatives of the sea. Seashells, one of the stories associated with Leucothia is that if your petitions to her were successful, you could hear from your lost loved one by holding a seashell to your ear, a practice we still pursue but with little or no understanding of why we do it.
